Portare il lettore nel cuore del testo. L’ekphrasis nei dialoghi di Platone PDF Print Email

Lidia Palumbo

Abstract

In this essay I’d like to show how the ekphrasis is used by Plato in order to take the reader into the heart of the text. When Plato writes his dialogues, in my opinion, he outlines a scene and the reader is almost invited to move to this scene. The invisible author of the dialogue, his characters, his readers move to be present at a symposium, to talk in a gymnasium or in the Socrates’ prison and to philosophize all together. The scene, in which the speaking figures and their dialogues are held, is prepared by the philosopher who chooses all the words with great care. So, inside Plato’s dialogues, the verba videndi play an important role in this choice. Through these verba, since Homer’s time, the characters see, we can say that they see and the readers can also see.
