Abstract

In his book Erbschaft dieser Zeit, Ernst Bloch faces the theories of the Kosmiker and especially those of Ludwig Klages, otherwise rejected by the Kulturkritik. In particular, Bloch considers the klagesian theory of the «Truth of Images» as an example of what he calls montage, a procedure aimed to inherit the past in a positive way. However Bloch shows how the klagesian montage remains ineffective, being restricted to the aim of renovating the old into the new, with no intention towards an «utopian conversation» of the past. The essay analyzes how the two different approaches to myth and past determinate a different role of the subject in front of reality. While in Bloch myth has to be elaborated in the present time by a conscious subjectivity, in Klages it is precisely the manipulation of the mythical material that negates both the content and the cognitive value of myth.
