Abstract

Chapter 15 of the treatise Peri ypsous is about phantasia as a way to get the Sublime. Phantasia amounts to a mental state peculiar to people being a prey to ecstatic enthusiasm, who are able to turn into images the words they address their audience. The ability of turning words into images is what the anonym author of the treatise refers to when he speaks about «evidence» (enargheia). As a consequence of rhetoric phantasiai, evidence amounts to the speaker’s ability in creating images able to engender audience’s astonishment by the convincing power of argument. When caught by phantasia, good speakers convey to their audience the images sprung from their words in the very same way that Euripides shows the spectators the Furies, that are seen by himself in the first place, pursuing Orestes in his madness.

Paolo Togni ha conseguito il titolo di dottore di ricerca in storia della filosofia all’Università di Macerata. Ha studiato per un anno come visiting scholar presso la Faculty of Classics dell’Università di Cambridge ed è attualmente assegnista di ricerca all’Università di Siena, dove collabora a un progetto sulle teorie tardoantiche della provvidenza. Si è occupato a lungo di epistemologia stoica e ha pubblicato il volume Conoscenza e virtù nella dialettica stoica, Bibliopolis, Napoli 2010. Ha curato la voce stoicismo per il volume, a cura di Umberto Eco, L’Antichità – Grecia, Encyclomedia Publishers, Milano 2012.
